Course Description

Have a great summer!

Dear Parents,

It has been a busy last week!  We squeezed in some algebra, a lesson on magnets, and continued our spelling and math review.  Our class loved filling out their time capsules and were amazed to discover how much their interests have changed in a year.  We finished watching Popper’s Penguins and had a great nature walk.  The last day of school was filled with fun activities.  We began with a third-grade spelling bee followed with crosswords, fortune tellers, and some games.  Finally, your child had a pizza lunch and a sweet treat to top it all off.

Gustaf is moving to Sweden this summer.  He handed out a small strip of paper with his new contact information on it.  Encourage your child to write him a real letter, postcard, or email over the summer.  He would love that.  Having a pen pal can be so much fun and it is great writing practice as well.  If you are looking for extra practice over the summer the spelling and math workbook have some great review pages that we could not squeeze in.  Reading for pleasure is always a great choice too.

In addition, we want to thank all our volunteers that have helped this year.  You were a great part of our village who helped our class thrive.  We hope you have a great summer and enjoy some quality family time.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Libby and Mrs. Cosgrove

Nature Walk
We had a great morning exploring nature on our hike! Thank you to the nature leaders and all the parents who made this a special day!

Tomorrow is the last day of school! Dismissal is at 12:00. Have a great summer!

Happy Last Friday of the school year!

We had a busy week with a lot of fun and academic activities!

We finished up reading our literature books! They loved having the choice of what to read with guided discussions.  Keep reading over the summer! Maybe even start a book club with friends.

The "Expert Books" have been a lot of fun to create! We will be finishing them up next week.

Next week we have our Nature walk on Wednesday morning. Please make sure to wear athletic shoes, long pants, and a light sweatshirt. Hats are suggested if the sun is out.  The hike is not long and very hands on, so water bottles will not be carried.

Thursday is our last day of school!  We will be having a spelling bee, outside fun activities, and then pizza!  We are out at noon!

Many of you have heard that I am moving to Rancho Vista to teach third grade full time (Mrs. Cosgrove).  Please visit anytime! Vista Grande has been my home for 18 years and I have enjoyed every minute.  Thank you for being my very special "Last VG Class"!  My last day will be Wednesday next week.  I will be taking my son to Annapolis to the Naval Academy for summer school.

Mrs. Libby will be here on Thursday and will be teaching with Mrs. Dunn (current 5th grade teacher) next year in room 8! Please keep stopping by to give her hugs :)

Run club
Congratulations to these amazing runners! Thank you Pam Light for bring this wonderful program to VG!

Happy Friday! A few notes from this week and reminders for next week!

  • Students are enjoying reading their chosen chapter book! We are in a rush to make sure we can finish before school gets out so please help them stay on track with reading the chapters assigned for homework!
  • We finished up our measurement unit this week.  Real world two step word problems can be difficult for some. Keep practicing!
  • Our music performance on Wednesday was a success!  Everyone had so much fun dancing, singing, and playing the recorder. Thank you to Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Held for all the help this year!
  • We finished up our nature classes this week learning all about birds and snakes and adaptations!  We are excited to go on the nature hike on June 5th.  Please make sure you sign the online permission slip. I have included a link and it was also emailed home last week!

Enjoy your 3 day weekend!  We will see you next week for another fun-filled week in 3rd grade!

This was our last FULL week of school! Next week we have a minimum day on Friday, May 24th and Monday the 27th is Memorial Day!

In math we finished up the unit on money! Remember to have your children practice with money at the grocery store or even "pretending" to buy dinner.  The real life practice helps students solidify what they learn in class.

In reading we started literature circles.  Each student was able to choose one book to read out of four different choices. They will be reading these books and working on comprehension with their small groups. Everyone is excited about the book that they chose.  Look for these to come home as reading homework a couple times next week.

All students are becoming experts on a native american tribe and have spent some time researching the tribe. They will create a flip book next week to share with the class.

We continued to build bridges in science!

A reminder that next week we have our music performance in the MPR at 9am on Wednesday, May 22nd.  We hope to see you there.

All library books need to be returned as soon as possible.

Have a great week!

We had another fabulous week in Room 8!

In math, we finished up customary length, weight, and capacity.

In reading, we finished reading Sarah, Plain, and Tall. We had some wonderful discussions about this book. We will begin new literature next week and will add a little twist to the class.

During our writing block we wrote persuasive paragraphs advertising our new candy bar creations.

In Science we began our Invisible Forces Science Unit. Our class loved making their hopper poppers while learning about the forces of push and pull.

Social Studies had us learning about the Tongva Native American people. Next week the students will be choosing a native american group to research and study. Most of the work will be done in class, but it might come home if necessary.

Have a wonderful Mother's Day!

We have finished our 157th day of school! Hooray!

This morning was a special morning honoring some of our wonderful Vista Grande parents at our annual Honorary Service Awards. Our own Mrs. Libby was presented with an award for her ongoing service toward making our school a positive place to learn and grow. Great job Mrs. Libby!  Mrs. Light, Mrs. Chalfin, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Coward all received awards for all their hard work to make Vista Grande a great school!  Finally, Mr. Maeder was gifted a beautiful bench to be placed in the Kindergarten yard to honor all the hard work he has done to make our Kinder families and kids feel special and welcome! Thank you to all our wonderful parents!

This week our class wrapped up their animal reports.  Each student shared their favorite part of their wild animal report. We changed seats, picked prizes and got ready for May.  Time is flying by!  On Tuesday Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Libby learned all about the new reading program for next year.  There will be many online components that the students and yourself can use at home next year.

In math, we focused on the metric system.  We converted meters, centimeters, grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters and more.  Our class has finished taking the math portion of the state test.  We are all done!  We saw many students trying hard, thinking, using scratch paper, and just trying their best.

We also wrote 3 Haiku poems, and wrote an opinion piece about someone special in their life.

Thank you for making us feel special during Teacher Appreciation Week.  We loved our flowers, lunch, and the delicious snacks.  The sweet notes the kids wrote are always so fun to read.  We will use our gift cards to buy some labels, book boxes, a cable floor cover, and a few specific books for the class.

Have a nice weekend.

Third Grade Music Performance

Dear Parents,
Please come to the third grade music performance in the M.P.R. on Wednesday, May 22nd at 9:00 a.m.  Your child will showcase all of the great things they have learned this year in music with Mrs. Perkins.  We hope to see you there.

Good Afternoon Room 8 Families!

Our students did great this week on their state test.  Our class was focused and tried their best.  We really were excited to see them take their time and read quietly while others were trying to finish their work.  It was amazing to see how much the students were typing on their own.  This week we finished up the language arts portion and next week we will be working on math.  Please encourage a good bedtime, eating a healthy breakfast, and having a good snack each day next week.

In science this week we began to learn about fossils.  Our class made their own fossils out of clay and discovered that different types of fossils can be found in the same location.  We discussed Pangaea and how the Earth has changed over time.

In math we continued to work on time, subtracting time, and elapsed time on a number line.  Thank you for any support you have given at home.  Sometimes this is a hard concept to master.  We will be discussing measurement next week.

In social studies we continue to learn about Native Americans. We have a fun project coming up in the next couple weeks.

Our class collected and counted many coins for the Team Kids Earth challenge this week.  Our class donated $60.00 to ocean research to help our environment.  Great job room 8!

Next week.....
On Tuesday Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Libby will be at a language arts training all day.  Grades 3,4,5 will have a new language arts program next year.  It is called Wonders.  Your child will be starting off next year using this new program.  There will be a substitute on Tuesday.  Our class will not do state testing next Tuesday.

Homework for the week will be to type their animal reports along with reflex and reading. A detailed note will come home Monday in their homework folder with their rough drafts and notes. Please keep the rough draft in their homework folder as we might have time during the school day to work on the typing as well.  This will be due Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

As I am sitting in the classroom writing about our week I can hear all the laughter and fun happening at our Spring Festival. Thank you to everyone who helped out and attended the fun afternoon!

We had a great week!
  • We finished up our Interdependence Unit today. The students learned all about the animals and plants in both the desert and arctic tundra.
  • We are still working on telling time, changing minutes to hours and back, and elapsed time.  They logged onto Khan academy this week and it is a great place to practice this skill!
  • In Social Studies we continue to learn about Native Americans.
  • We finished researching our animals and began to write our rough drafts for our animal reports.  Some homework next week and the following week will be to type the report. Look at their homework log for specifics.
  • Next week we begin CAASP testing. This is the first year your children will be taking the state test.  It is only about an hour a day for three to four days during the next two weeks.  We make it as low key as possible and remind the students to do their very best. Please make sure your children get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before school.
Finally, we only have 32 days left in this school year! It has gone by so fast. Thank you all for your support. We have had a great year!

Enjoy your weekend!

Mrs. Cosgrove

Dear Parents,

This week has flown by.  We loved hearing about all of the fun things your families did over Spring Break. This week we continued to work on area and perimeter and next week we will start to work on elapsed time.  We are jumping around in math a little to make sure we cover the most important topics before our class takes the state test.

Our class will be taking the state test on April 22-May 3rd.  Please make sure your child is in class on those days from 11:00 - 12:15 p.m.   Please remind your child to eat a good breakfast and to bring a healthy snack to school on those days as well.

In reading, we have been working on plays, poems, and reader's theaters.  We have been focusing on how each one is organized.  In science, we have continued to work on animal and plant adaptations.  This week we finished our focus of the desert environment and moved on to the arctic tundra habitat.

The Spring Festival will be on Friday, April 19th, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at VG. Your kid(s) won't want to miss it!

Have a great weekend!
