Cosgrove/Libby's 3rd Grade Class

Course Description

Posts

Dear Room 8 Families,

  • This week our class focused on analyzing an author’s point of view.  The students read about praying mantids and focused on the author's feeling by looking for how the author described the insect.
  • Our class also read about tiny houses and had to compare 2 articles and write about why some people choose to live in a tiny house.
  • Our class also watched Charlotte’s Web and searched for differences between the movie and the book.
  • In science, our class analyzed data from a beaver building a dam.  The students had to explain the effects of the change in water flow after the beaver changed the habitat.  Our class had to make a claim, provide evidence using the data given, and explain what was happening in their own words using scientific vocabulary.  This is part of the new science standards.
  • In science we also researched specific lizards with a partner.  Next week we will be building a habitat for our lizards.  Your child may bring in a small bag of twigs, pebbles, and dirt to make their habitat look realistic.  Please write your child's name on their bag. We are also in need of a few more shirt boxes.  I only had 10 at my house and we need 3 more. If you have an extra gift box from the holidays please send one in.
  • In math, we finished up geometry in chapter 18. Now we will move onto area and perimeter in chapter 19.

Next week.....

  • We will be having a VG spirit week next week.

Third graders are encouraged to wear blue as much as possible for the whole week. Each day at lunch there will be something fun to do.  There will be pin the tail on the sailboat, blindfolded drawing, water bottle bowling, and mystery box-guess what is in the box.

  • There will be no homework on Tuesday.  Many students in our class have a special choral recital at the Norris that night.
  • Next Friday is a minimum day.
  • Spring Break is the first week of April.
  • That’s all.  Have a nice weekend.

Dear Room 8 Families,

  • This week our class continued to read Charlotte’s Web.  We are almost done reading the whole book.
  • In math we have started to work on chapter 18 which is all about geometric shapes and all their attributes.
  • To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day we wrote persuasive essays to a leprechaun.  Each child had to prove why they would be a great security guard to guard a leprechaun’s gold.  They came up with some great ideas.
  • Many students shared their traps. Our class was very interested in how each one worked.
  • In science we discussed if humans should get involved if polar bears start to have a hard time finding food.  We had a good discussion on the pros and cons of getting involved in a wild animal’s food chain.
  • Finally, we enjoyed our last Art at Your Fingertips project.  Our class designed tiles with a specific pattern.

Next week....

  • Music is on Monday (recorders in backpacks please)
  • Family Science Night is next Friday.

That’s all.  Have a great weekend!

Room 8 had a great time on the field trip today.  Kids just love riding on a school bus.  It is so fun to see the enjoyment they get from waving to cars and seeing their house from inside a bus window.  Our docent from the IOWA was so interesting and shared many facts and stories with us.  Our class had so many great questions.  The paragraphs they wrote this week gave them great background knowledge about the IOWA.  We ate lunch at the Korean Bell and took a peek at the bell.  It was pretty windy at the park today so we came back to school at around 2:00 and played on our playground instead.  It was a fun day!

On Thursday, an author came to our school and told his story about the process of writing and publishing a book.  It was an interesting assembly.

This week we continued to read Charlotte's Web and worked on angles and lines in math.  Next week we will finish up that chapter and move onto chapter 18 which is about two-dimensional shapes.

Next week:
Monday we will have music. Recorders should be in your child's backpack.

Tuesday we will have a grammar test.  Grammar packets should be in your child's blue homework folder.

Wednesday is our class photo.

Friday we will have another Art at Your Fingertips project.  It will start at 1:30 and end at 2:30.  We welcome any volunteers who would like to come and help.

Friday- Leprechaun traps are due.  Your child can bring them in on Wednesday if they want.

Have a great weekend!

Grammar Test

We will have our Grammar Packet #4 Test next Tuesday, March 12th. It was originally scheduled for tomorrow but after some review we realized many kids had not studied yet and needed a little extra time.  Please review the packet with your children tonight and this weekend to prepare for the test on Tuesday.

Thank you!

  • Pack a sack lunch with your child's name and room number on the bag. Include a beverage in a disposable or recyclable container. Please no lunch boxes!
  • No money is required or necessary!
  • The buses will be returning to school at approximately 3:00pm.
We are all looking forward to this wonderful day!

Dear Room 8 Familes,

This week we finished up our math chapter about graphs and line plots.  We continued to read Charlotte’s Web.  In computer lab we typed a document about what a good friend is and made character trait webs in class.  Ask your child what word they chose to describe themselves.  In reading, we also learned about text features in nonfiction passages.  We searched through many Scholatic newsletters to identify many different types.  Last, we started our new science unit called Environmental Changes and Effects.  We talked about how natural disasters can affect animals and plants.  Finally, your child designed and relocated a new location for a pond that was in danger of being destroyed by a newly built mine.  This was great practice to design a solution to a meaningful problem that could happen.  They jumped right into researching and solving this real-world problem with a friend.

Please remember-

Next week is the start of Read Across America. Any time your child reads have them note the minutes on their reading log.

The Book Fair is next week.

 Have a nice weekend.

Dear Room 8 Families,

This week.....

  • Our class enjoyed listening to all the book reports and seeing their fellow classmates dressed up.  We took pictures of each child dressed in their costume with their prop.  All of the decorated puppets will be displayed along with their picture on our board soon.
  • Our class has continued to practice persuasive writing.  We wrote letters to Mrs. Holloway persuading her that a 4 day school week was a great idea.  She said she will write back to us soon.  We also wrote informative paragraphs explaining how rainbows work.
  • In math, we are done with fractions and are now moving onto analyzing data from bar graphs, line plots, and tally charts in Chapter 13.  Today we designed our own graphs in class.
  • We have started to read Charlotte’s Web this week.  In the next few weeks we will be focusing on character traits and friendship as well as analyzing the story.

Upcoming events...

Dear Room 8 Familes,
Our class had an eventful week.  We saw many instances of being kind this week.  We saw nice letters being written, supportive friends, helping each other and lots of smiles.  The thunder and lightning was so unexpected this week.

In math, we drew fraction robots, made fraction number lines, compared fractions and looked for equivalent fractions.  We discussed how fractions are all around.  When you are cooking at home try to talk about fractions if you can with your child.

We also wrapped up our constitution study this week.  Our class created a constitution book.  We will be reading our creation in class next week.  The students made a 50 page class book together.

Finally, on Friday we started to get ready for February.  We have been learning about opinion writing and practicing writing strong leads.  Today your child chose a dangerous animal to research.  We will be writing a strong opinion paragraph on why a dangerous animal would not be a good valentine.  Ask your child what animal they picked.

On Monday our class list will be handed out so your child can make valentines for the class.  Please look for the pink sheet in their homework folder on Monday.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Room 8 Families,
It was a whirlwind week! Room 8  students focused on what The Preamble to the Constitution is and what it means.  This is a great start for them to understand what our founding fathers valued. Our class worked really hard on their chapter 9 math word problem test.  Now we are halfway done with our math program.  Many students did not have their 3 green Reflex lights today.  Please encourage your child to log on to Reflex and earn their 3 green lights each week.

Next week is going to be a fun week.  We will be celebrating Yellow Ribbon Week.  The focus will be on kindness and friendship.  A flier was sent home today about all of the activities for next week.  I will also put them here if you need another copy.  During lunch recess there will be fun friendship activities for your child to do.
