October Room 8 Update!

Hi Parents!
Another busy week in room 8! Thank you to everyone for your help and donations for the Fun Run. It was a fun and very busy two weeks!

In math, we are finishing up using 2-step word problems using bar models. We will have the test on Tuesday. For language arts, we have been reading about folktales and continuing to practice writing narratives. During social studies, we are working on landmarks in Palos Verdes.

A couple of reminders for next week:
-Please have students bring their recorders for music on Monday.
-Book reports are Monday and Tuesday. Have students practice at home and bring their prop. They may bring their note cards, but make sure to have eye contact with the audience.
-Please join us for the Halloween parade on Thursday at 8:35. Students may come dressed in their costumes, but bring a bag of clothes to change into after the parade.
-Lastly, it is Red Ribbon Week next week with many fun activities! A flyer went home today with a list of the activities.
Let us know if you have any questions! Have a great weekend!

It was a memorable day for sure!   Our class responded quickly and quietly when the power went off.  The noise did startle them a bit.   They quickly listened and followed directions on the playground.  We were so proud of how they responded to an event that happened near our school.  After recess, our class was filled with questions about electricity and how it works.  We talked about safety around electricity and why the power was not turned on right away.  I'm sure you will hear the story tonight about their day.

This week your child has also been researching a famous landmark.  Today, when the power came back on we learned how to use Powerpoint. Our class quickly became familiar with the program and with a partner they created a few slides about their famous landmark.

Please remember that the Scholastic Book order is due this week.
Thank you!

Dear Parents,
The Scholastic book orders were sent home yesterday.  All orders are due next Friday, October 18th. Here is the link to access the Scholastic website.

October Update

Dear Parents,

Our class was so excited to have a fun Wednesday at home. Thank you for the sweet drink, treat, flowers, gift card, and handmade card from the class.  I felt so special on my birthday.  It was very appreciated.

Here is some updated news from our class:

At the end of October your child will have an oral book report.  Each student should have a chapter book that they are reading at home.  On October 28th and 29th you child will present their oral report on their chapter book.  We are looking for eye contact, evidence that they practiced at home, and a strong voice.  An index card was sent home for them to use.  The report does not have to be long.  They just need to clearly tell us what the book was about, share their favorite part, and show us a prop that they have chosen.  Their prop can be anything that reminds them of that book.

Last week we read realistic fiction about inventors in language arts.  We discussed how inventors think of their new ideas.  We also focused on the character traits that inventors need to succeed. This week in language arts and social studies we have read nonfiction passages about U.S. landmarks.  Many students in our class were excited to share that they had already seen some national landmarks with their families.  In science we continued to study weather and learned about different climates around the world.  In math we are reviewing addition with regrouping and subtraction with regrouping/borrowing as well.

Finally, if possible, please register for the Sketchers Pier to Pier walk.  You don’t even have to walk.  You can walk in spirit and be a virtual walker.  It’s a great fund raiser because Sketchers generously matches your donation.  All proceeds will go to the Peninsula Education Foundation if you specify that.  Any amount is appreciated.  I just signed up to support VG today!

Room 8 Updates

Happy Friday!
It's almost October and we want to let you know about a few things happening in Room 8!

We have finally finished Chapter 2 in math, as we needed a lot of practice! We are now working on Chapter 3 and it seems that most are comfortable with addition and regrouping. Continue to practice rounding numbers with Khan Academy and Reflex at home.

We have been busy writing our haunted house stories in class and they will be posted in the office for the month of October. Also, the kids enjoyed the book fair this week and have been busy reading a lot in class! We have started centers in class, and the kids have done a great job staying on task and completing their work while the teachers get to read with a small group.

Lastly, we have two reminders for next week. Please turn in your forms to our room parent, Stephanie Boulos, so she can have your information for class updates. Also, please remind your child about the Reflections art project. See information below:

Dear Vista Grande Parents,

This year, there is an exciting new opportunity for your child to display his/her artwork in Vista Grande’s art show!

The Reflections Art Program is an art contest that is open to all Vista Grande students. The artwork will be judged by a professional artist, and winners will go on to the district level to compete with artwork from other schools.

This year, we will be displaying students’ artwork in the MPR for a few days so that other Vista Grande students may view their peers’ work. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive recognition from teachers, parents and their fellow students!

This year’s theme is “Look Within,” and it can be interpreted in many different ways. Some examples may include:

·      Figurative: What’s inside your mind, dreams, heart? Illustrate your feelings using imagery or a poem.

·      Literal: What’s inside a box in your house, an interesting container, pretend you’re peeking inside a “secret garden,” a lock in the door or an imaginary hole, etc.

There is no right or wrong way to interpret the theme, and the art contest is open to all students, regardless of age or experience. As a reminder, entries must be received by Friday, October 11 – that’s right around the corner!

Entry forms and submission guidelines are available online through the Vista Grande website (under Parents - Volunteers - Reflections) or the Monday Morning Message. Artwork with completed entry form attached may be dropped off in the Reflections box located at the Vista Grande main office. Don’t forget to also email a photo of your artwork to Karen Lyzun at [email protected].

If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected] or [email protected].

Thank you for supporting your child’s artistic talents!

Reflections Chair

That's all for now!

Thank you,

Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Libby

Dear Parents,
Thank you for coming to Back to School Night last night.  We know it is hard being gone around dinner time when you have young children at home.  Today we are putting together our volunteer schedule and feel so lucky to have so much parent support.  Both Mrs. Dunn and I have worked in other school districts and the parental support was not the same.  We appreciate working in Palos Verdes and working with supportive parents.  We are all helping our students to be their best.  Thanks for being part of our team.

A volunteer schedule (paper copy) will be sent home next week for the parents who signed up to help in our class.  If any of the days/times do not work with your schedule please just let us know and we will update the calendar.

A few parents have asked why Mrs. Dunn and I job share.  Sharing this job allows us to be "our best" at school and at home.  At school, we are happy to be there and will put all of our effort and attention towards your children on those days.  At home, we are able to give our own children attention, nutritious food, clean clothes, and do the hundreds of errands that parents usually have to do.

We are also often asked why our children do not go to school at Vista Grande.  When we work, the grandparents pick up our children from school.  Each grandparent lives close by to our own homes and it is more convenient for them to go to their neighborhood school.  It is also easier for us to focus on our job when our children are not there after school.

Please let us know if you have any more questions.  Our goal is to encourage your children to be their best and to try their best.  We will sprinkle in as much fun as possible.  Learning can be fun!
Thank you,

Back to School Update

Dear Parents,
We have enjoyed meeting and getting to know your kids since school started.  Last week we created our class rules, read some great books, and wrote a little autobiography.  This week we started our math program, worked on some assessments and began a narrative story.  Next week we will start our new reading program.  This month in science we will be learning about weather patterns and climate.  In social studies we will focus on maps, landforms, and communities.

We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 12th.  Please meet in the MPR from 6:15-6:45.  Our room 8 presentation will begin at 6:50 and last until 7:30.  The students have been working hard to show you their art and writing.  Have a great weekend and see you next week.
