Room 8

Dear Parents,
A few parents have asked some good questions.  We clarified online a little more specifically what is assigned and what is optional for math. We also moved math homework to optional.  Five pages of math a day at home should be good. (Four workbook pages and one Math 4 Today page).  We did school work with our own sons today and we understand exactly what you are doing at home with your own children.  We want to make this as smooth for your family as possible.

Room 8

Dear Parents,
Please encourage your child to do the best they can with the math workbook pages this week.  If your child struggles to fill in the workbook pages, they do not understand the number bonds, or how to fill in the blanks that is ok.  Math in Focus is just showing the kids a way to do mental math.  If it is too confusing for them just cross out the bubbles and spaces and add/subtract however they feel comfortable.

Home Learning Updates

Dear Parents,
We have added a daily home learning checklist for you to print out.  Kids do well with structure when they know what they need to do.  We have also included some enrichment, chore ideas, P.E. ideas,  and interesting art and science links.  All new items can be found in the Home Learning folder on the right hand side of our main class page.

Room 8 update

Dear Parents,
Thank you for coming in and getting your child's work today.  You only have to print out the homework for chapter 10 and chapter 17 in math.  Included in the home learning folder you will find math reteach and math enrichment if you need that for your child.  The answer key for the math pretests are also posted.  If your child misses more than 4 problems then they should do the reteach before the math workbook pages.  If they do not miss any on the math pretest then they should be able to go straight to the workbook.  If the workbook is not difficult for them you should print out the enrichment for that math chapter.  Please do what works for your family.  Stay healthy!

This week in Room 8...

  • Mrs. Libby was out this week for 2 days to attend meetings.  One meeting was at the district office.  The other meeting concluded Mrs. Libby’s C.E.R.T. training for disaster preparedness. Mrs. Libby will share all this good knowledge with Mrs. Dunn.  Topics included: fire and earthquake preparedness and response, active shooter response training, search and rescue, and first aid.
  • Room 8 was in good hands with Mrs. Sally Nilsen.  She was a third-grade teacher at Vista Grande for 30 years.  We try to use her whenever we need a sub.
  • Both Mrs. Libby and Mrs. Dunn will be out for a grades 3-5 meeting at the district office next Monday.
  • This week our class enjoyed listening to all the book reports and learning about historical events and famous people from the past.  We could really get a sense that they understand the nonfiction book that they read. Thank you for any support you gave them at home for this.
  • We continued to learn about animal adaptations, took notes, and wrote a great response to the weekly story.
  • In math we began to learn about graphing data and took our fractions test.
  • Next week team kids is asking for donations to  Rainbow Shelter.  A list went home with your child this week. Any small baby items would be a great idea to donate. (baby wipes, bottles, pacifier etc.)
  • Have a great weekend!

Dear Room 8 Families,

  • Last week our class attended a special assembly for third graders.  It was called Music Mobile.  Our class was introduced to many new instruments and parts of an orchestra.  At the end of the assembly all the third-grade students had a chance to touch the instruments and make some sounds on their own.  Next year your child will have the option to learn how to play a musical instrument in music.
  • On Wednesday we had Art at Your Fingertips.  Our class created colorful portraits using the cubism technique.  It was a very creative project.  Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped that day and the project before that.
  • We are finishing up our fraction unit of study.  Please remember that Khan Academy is available to help strengthen what we are learning in class.  I have recently assigned the next math topic we will be learning about.  Representing and Interpreting Data are the concepts and skills we will be focusing on next.  That is chapter 13 in our math program.
  • In language arts we are continuing to write strong opinion paragraphs and read informational texts.
  • In science we have been learning about animal habitats and animal fossils.  Some students have brought some great background knowledge to our discussions.
  • Our class thoroughly enjoyed Valentine’s Day.  They loved sharing all their treats with their friends.
  • All oral book reports are due the week of Feb. 19-22.  Please remind your child to practice in front of you before they present their report next week.
  • We will be having an upcoming field trip to the California Science Center on Friday, March 20th.  A permission slip will be sent home soon.  At the Science Center our class will participate in a STEM lesson and have chance to explore inside the museum.  A sack lunch will need to be packed for your child that day.  Please email us if you are interested in going on the field trip with us that day.

Room 8 update

Dear Parents,
Next week we will have Yellow Ribbon Week.  This upcoming week will focus on being kind to others.  Please come and have lunch with your child on Wednesday at lunch if you can.  Wednesday also happens to be our Art at Your Fingertips lesson at 1:00.  Please feel free to come and help or check out the art project your child will make that day.  Thursday at 1:40 we will also have a garden lesson.  It is going to be a fun week.

This week we learned:
Reading- We read many stories about the United States Westward Expansion movement.  We learned about the prairie, the Oregon Trail, the Continental Railroad, steamboats, and more.

Math-We started learning about fractions.  We will start off reviewing and then will gradually go into harder concepts in fractions.  We will now be teaching the math chapters out of order.  The third grade teachers have selected the most important chapters to teach in order of importance.

Writing-We have continued to work on our expert books.  We are done drafting and will start revising and typing our books in class next week.

Update: If your child has passed all of the Reflex fact pyramids up to 12 in multiplication and division we would like those students to log onto Khan Academy instead.  Fractions have been assigned for Khan Academy.

If your child is on 1-10 or 0-12 multiplication and division on Reflex they are where they need to be at this time of the year.  The goal is to get 3 green lights a week.  The more you do Reflex the quicker you make progress.

Have a great weekend!

Room 8 Update

Dear Parents,

We have had a fun and busy week and a half.  It was nice to see all the kids smiling faces again after break.  Last week in reading we read articles about Earth, Mars, Saturn, and our solar system.  Our class loved hearing about the 17 year old who recently discovered a new planet.  Our class was excited to learn, Wolf, a high school intern, was so close to their age.  In math we continue to work on word problems with multiplication and division.  Our class is becoming better at problem solving every day.  In social studies we discussed the Civil Rights Movement.  This week in science we will continue to learn about plants.  Each child also created a poem focusing on their goals for the new year.  Ask your child what they wrote about.  Finally, we turned paper snowflakes into snowmen.  Each one is different and unique.  Thank you so much for the birthday wishes, flowers, coffee, and kind notes from the students.  Room 8 has a special place in our hearts.

Thank you!

Dear Room 8 families,

Thank you so much for the wonderful gift cards and decorated potted fir plants.  We both love shopping and relaxing and we will pick out something nice.  We hope you have a wonderful holiday break and a great first few days of the New Year.  We look forward to having a fun filled 2020!
