This is a required video to introduce some new concepts in preparation for chapter 10.

good morning 4th graders this is a video to introduce some of the concepts that are going to come out in chapter 10 so this week was on a we're going to keep going to start some of the Concepts that are for chapter 10 so chapter 10 covers to Big Ideas photos are parallel and perpendicular Lines line segments and Rays but before we can really talk about what parallel and perpendicular is we need to do a quick lesson on what a line segment a line or a ray start with a point so I'll point is like a. In space and when you're drawing it when you have to drive you just put a little. And that's a point using a letter example could be called point a just like on an angle when we were naming the angle we used three points on the angle we used the vertex which is one of the points and then we use a point on each side we use a letter when you have a series of points together all connected there's no space in between then you can form something called a line so a line is a series of points that salon and on forever in both directions to the way that we draw a line if we were on paper we would use a straightedge but for now we draw a line like this it has an arrow on both sides because that means it goes on and on in both directions forever and when we name a line we use two points to name the four examples and we would write that either with words or we can use a symbol two capital letters of the points were using it called the line symbol over the top so this is lying AZ and when it's a line you can write the letter heater order so we can also call this line Salina v-line VA two names for this line if I were to add a third point to line cuz remember this whole line is made up of points points are we could just keep picking up Alexei I pick a third point and I give it a letter so that's Point C now I'm still going to name it using just two letters but now I have more choices so I can still call this line or lime ba but I can also call it line AC I could call it line or I could reverse those as you line or line DC so any two points on a line can be used saw that they would know it Medline AC so allein allein has two arrows it goes on and on in both directions to use two letters two points and by the way. or if you're not getting all of this were going to go over at multiple times the line you can also have something called a ray not already a Ray is a series of points that go on and on in One Direction but stopped at an end on the other side something like this one and point where it stops and then an arrow has on and on in the other direction when we name a ray we also use two letters there's a little bit of a different role Ray you always use the endpoint as one of your letters so let's say this is and I have a point why so the point where it stops the point where there's no Arrow that's the endpoint this right now is an endpoint named and then I have another point my name is ready I have to name the endpoints first so this could be called Ray XY and right now that's the only name for this race I can't reverse them I can't because I have to make the endpoint first now if I wanted another name for the ray but I could do is name another point so let's say I name this point now I have I still have to pee first some still going to start with x ray but now I can use the note if I only use two points though I'm not going to use all three of them you have to use the end first X Y is a correct name or Ray at Z just like what's a line where we could use a symbol we can use a symbol here to LAX that's fine just has one arrow on it or Ray play one endpoint and arrow on this side goes on and on forever. line array last one that we're going to talk about is a line segment so a line segment is part of a line and it has to end soft on both sides in something like this what's a line segment it starts and stops you could have Point app segment you can only use the endpoints to name it so the only name for this line segment is going to be line segments line segment but you can put them in either order but you have to use the endpoints even if I name another Point within the line segment I still want to use the endpoints to name the line line segment or line segment NM and again with the symbol for a line segment it's just a straight line with no arrows and the letters underneath symbols naming with the symbol line segment two endpoints no errors that I started with parallel and perpendicular so these are words that we've made him mentioned before we're going to really study them and learn how to identify parallel and perpendicular and draw parallel and perpendicular lines line segments or rays in the next chapter of parallel parallel means that two lines line segments or Rays have points that are equal distance apart the all the time and tire time they never get closer together they never get further apart so people say it is at the lines or line segments or rays will never intersect never cross each other and I'm in a free hand this which is not going to be perfect two limes to the parallel did never get closer together and should never get further apart equidistant the entire time the point stay the same distance apart perpendicular perpendicular means that they do intersex and they crossed in a very specific special perpendicular lines intersect or cross to form a right angles pencil we're going to do just a couple minutes working on paper with Lines line segments rays and perpendicular and parallel so probably grab some paper and then we'll get started alright so we're just going to send a couple minutes here in again this is the first thing I do is win drawing a line and line segment in a red so let's start with a line segment so used to do is basically take notes with me and everything that I do you're going to do for everything I write the line segment with two line segments are skew so if you were asked to draw a line segment RQ and your drawing now you're not on whiteboard so you're going to use a straight I'm going to just keep using my Pro as my straight edge it's a nice small easy size to use and it'll work at the straight edge so line segments are skew I'm going to start by drawing a straight line it's a line segment meaning of piece of a line that means it has two endpoints and I'm going to label them with the two letters they can go on either side as long as I put the are in the queue on the endpoints line segment I'm going to write the name with the symbol r you and any other name is to just switch the order of the endpoints of that would be QR if you need to pause for a second and catch up and draw this go ahead and do that alright next let's do a ray so let's say we have r a a w d r a w d so remember Ray means it has no one endpoint so I didn't want to have my Ray going straight up or close to straight up to vertical weather remember there is a rule about the order of the letters whatever the first letter A has to be your end of my arrows here since W is a first letter I named I need to make W the endpoint hair wz add appointment Dan frizzi I'm going to draw the ray symbol Android w v that is the only name for that red all right let's go a slimy s so alive remember has two arrow that goes on and on in both directions I need a pointy and a point app K and I can use the symbol e a stand for a lion remember you can switch the order I do ask those are my two possible names for the line if I were to add more points I can have more names we're going to leave it at that for now or I trying to do two more things one that has parallel and perpendicular play that the directions said to draw r a s t parallel line how do you spell princess look at the directions to a s t I know it's a parallel line segments really really careful gif construction we would have a special way of making sure is parallel will talk more about that next week but for now we're just going to kind of eyeball it and try to make it look as parallel to can't remember parallel means that they never going to intercept start by drawing two lines that appear as best I can to be parallel and the way that they need to be labeled so one of them needs to be array don't make this one here's my arrow asked was named first that has to be the endpoints an S here and then I need a point key somewhere on it since the name is Ray as he say and in the second one needs to be aligned a line segment that has two endpoints with the letters A and B so here we have Ray St parallel to line segment AZ say it said to draw line WX perpendicular segment I don't have the symbols on the letters because this time I use the words draw a line WS perpendicular to hit it at a right angle the line segment CD to draw the two perpendicular lines and then I'm going to adjust by adding and points are areas where I need them perpendicular used to hit at a right angle and I'll tell you I'm kind of using a protractor amusing that tea before going to work more on that later but I'm using that tea to help me figure out a 90 degree angle are we going to I'm going to put that little square corner remember two more angles that means it's 90° now I just need to label a line WX to be my line I'm going to make it this one line means two arrows w line segment CD line segment means two endpoints has stopped and they are perpendicular to each other so that's your quick introduction to some of the concepts that are going to come up in chapter 10 a lot more but hopefully you got a little bit of that and if you're not taking it yet don't worry it's going to get easier as we practice
