good morning this is Thursday's workbook pages or just one page today happy 3636 a little bit more work going to start with number one so number one says the number in each rectangle which rectangle is the sum of the numbers in the two circles next to it so in other words you need to figure out two numbers that add together equal 1.4 members have to also work when you do this part of the problem Amber's that add together to equal 1.7 and then two numbers that will add together to equal 0.7 only I do this work this is a pencil because we're going to use a method called gas and check which means we're going to pick some numbers we're going to try to see if they'll work let me play .500 and then think about what I would need to put in the other circles and see if it will work for the rest of the problem so if I could point five year 5/10 if I look down here I'm thinking 5:10 plus what will get me to 9/10 5:10 can you keep moving around 4:10 what will that be to 1 7/10 for 10 33107 so so far it's working but here's the last little bit you got a check when I get over here I need to see just this number unfortunately so that's what I guess and check method is we guessed we checked it and we found out that's not going to work so you might want to price of try a couple more try it on your own and if you get really stuck I'm going to go point well these are even bigger numbers here so I'm thinking I need something bigger here maybe I'll try I'll try just a one the 1.0 work around this way so why 7.4 that works there now I keep going this way so point 4 plus what equals 2.9 but then I get down here and I say okay does it work for that last rectangle 1 + 0.5 is not going to be 1.7 it would be 1.5 off on that one but not too far off come back here and it just a little bit and try 1.1 1.1 plus what will get me to 1.4 that's going to be the 0.3 1.1 + 0.3 that's going to equal 1.4 so that works and so now I'm thinking zero point 3 plus what is going to get me to 0.9 0.6 to do our check here 1.1 + 0.6 does not equal 1.7 + so we have found numbers that will work for all three rectangles next one Rena $5 her brother saves I started saving 4 weeks earlier after how many weeks will Rena saving equal to her brother's Rita saving $5 each week $55 - 250 her brother is saving 250 so the other part of the problem that's important started saving for weeks earlier so what happens with a problem like this or there's going to be numbers increasing over several weeks or days or whatever the problem is to make a chart and her brother netronline this way I'm going to try another line here's that it is week 3 for I don't know how many weeks is going to take but I know start saving till after the 4th week so I'm going to go aways after that I think I'll stop at 10 and multiplication and division practice and then 18 is a few word problems couple two word problems one of the word problems is very similar to what we just Molly saving money everyday Marcus saving for 10 everyday but Molly starts 5 days before so you're going to want to set up just questions a little different when they're equal is asking when one person is greater than the other day so try that one on your own item it says Christine how to rope that was eight she cut it into three pieces the first piece was 1.84 feet longer than the second the third piece was 1.16 ft longer than the second how long was the third piece so it's a little tricky here kind of like a bar model info just get them started and then if we want to use a bar model we might but she's got a long rope so I just want to kind of picture what she's done she's cut it in 3 pieces pieces or not and if you read the question carefully you can figure out which piece has the smallest it says the first piece is longer than the second and the third piece is longer than the second so I'm going to start by putting that middle piece a little shorter than the other add to it okay so here's the second piece we're not sure how long it is but there it is we know that the first is equal to the second 1 + 1.840 is equal to the second one but it's 1.84 longer and in the third one is equal to the 1 + 1.16 so now we can kind of set up that bar model so it's going to take 3 bars far as one key so I'm going to write first second. third piece II pieces of shortest women to drive first shortest would be the third one as much bigger than the second as a little confusing but you're adding left to the last piece then you are to the first one so I'm going to draw the third piece just a little bit longer second and then I'm going to draw the first piece a little bit longer than both of them and now here's where the bar mauling become powerful so we're going to dotted line this and dotted line those three parts are equal and we're going to label with the numbers that we know are the extra pieces so this piece right here 1.16 and this piece but if you remember Farm on get rid of these extra piece total first so what I mean is if we can subtract two numbers from the total length which was eight been working to know how long these three pieces are together Soo add together first so 1.16 + 1.84 I'm calling this kind of the extra wrote the wrote that is longer than the and it adds up to 3 seat extra parts on these pieces are equal to 3 ft all of this together is equal to 8 how long the Rope was the start so we're going to subtract the three feet extra from our total which gives us 15 ft can think about what that 15 feet is that three pieces of Rosalie kind of cut this off of our thinking and cut this off of our thinking and now we have three equal parts and we noticed these three heart out of 250 so we have three equal parts that add up to 15 we can do division to figure out what your part is divided by 3 equal actual question Pete so here's Arthur we know that it's 5 here plus the extra 1.16 so if we want the length of the third piece we're going to do five plus one .16 that extra bed on it we should give the 6.16 B's and that is our final answer.
