boys and girls I wanted to remind you that this week we've been talking and reading about working together to make things better do you remember the mice working together to find a way to avoid and how Lucy's tools the other I want you to be thinking about that bean as we read our new story today I also want you to remember how we've been learning about identifying the themes help us understand the stories that we've been reading you can think about determining the point of view of the character in a story and as we read the text and look at the illustration I want you to try to understand how the character is thinking and feeling before we read our story I'm going to share my screen and we're going to review some of our spelling words and word patterns no friends today we're going to look at our word patterns for let's try to sound these words out together food food to new new Snoop room room rule use juice Zoom Lou Engle truth we also have some words at the bottom of this list and I want you to look at them carefully we are going to focus on the ending of these words each word has a root word or a base word for example in this word painful teen would be the root word or the base word whenever you added ending to this root or base word you can change the meaning of the so if you have the suffix ful it means so us so we're adding that to the word Payne payneful means so when you add the stuff less to a root word or base word it means having less of so if something is endless meaning it doesn't have an end hopefully would be full of Hope useful would be full of used and clueless would be not having any clues so we're going to watch a short video on using suffixes because this is going to help you work in your practice and do your septic stage so please follow along I show you this next one thank you for your patience hello I am Chris the word whiz we will look at the end of words today you ready to look carefully let's go suffixes are letters at the end of a word he's change the meaning he will look at 4 and a bull here's one root word so true so true if you are a truthful person you are full of the truth or you tell the truth often how about what do you think that would mean yes another suffix is left this means without so if we had use and added lest it would mean without a use a hammer is useless for this project it is without use for this handle it answers the question how sometimes it answers the question how often you can try this one CX friendly to everyone what question does it answer how does she act got it let's look at another word with leave as a weekly music lesson this answers the question how often a weekly lesson would happen once a week we have one more suffix for today you can do something looks like the word Abel but as a suffix we say like in the word Rush Audible a washable sweater would be a sweater that can be worse what about lovable dog is lovable what would it mean yes you can love the dog right where go back to our story of the week and we have a very funny story to read this week some of you may know this story it's one that I really enjoy and it's Click Clack Moo cows that type I want you to follow along please John Ross fantasy essential Quest how can we work together to make our lives better read about how some smart cows and hens get what they want you just think about what a fantasy is we've talked about the watch in first grade so I want you to think about what makes the story of fantasy and I wouldn't ask you at the end Click Clack Moo cows that type by Doreen illustrated by Betsy Lewin and make a prediction about what you think the story might about think about it for a couple minutes look at the pictures look at the time and I want you to have that idea in your mind and then we're going to read along and see if you were right Farmer Brown has a problem is cows like to type all day long she hears click clack moo click clack moo, Brown hear is Click Clack Moo sounds what is happening on this page I know that the typewriters make a click clack sound I'll re-read to see if I missed anything let me see they long to hear is Click Clack Moo let me see what else I can find his cows like to type I read that Farmer's cows like to type now I understand but the cows are making me sounds that they type so we're going to remember that the theme of the story is the message that the author wants to share so what the characters are saying and doing can help us figure out what the theme is so be thinking about this team as we continue on at first he couldn't cows great friends remember when you ask yourself a question about something you read in the text you can usually find the answer if you keep reading so let's look on page 274 for we have this picture the farmer you read that the farmer couldn't believe his eyes what question could you ask perhaps what did the farmer see that he could not believe unpaid 275 the picture shows a letter chapter The Barn Door the cows wrote the letter asking for blankets what does this letter tell us think about it it tells us that the letter is what farmers it was bad enough they had found the old typewriter in the barn now they want an electric blanket no way electric blanket so the cows went on strike they left a note on the Barn Door sorry we are closed no no show Friends the word strike when it says the cows went on strike many of you have probably heard that word but if you don't know what it means it has to do with refusing to do work because you don't believe you are treated fairly let's now look so for clues about arsene what do the characters say and do what happens in the story let's think about these as if we were adding them to a Clues art the one clue I know is that the cows like to type we learned that on our first page another clue I learned so far is that the farmer will not give the cow blanket so the cows stop giving I wonder what other Clues were going to find no milk today price Farmer Brown in the background he heard the cows busy at work Click Clack Moo sometimes words are sounds are repeated in different places throughout the story and this can help us know that an action is being repeated so let's look on page 278 what words do you see that are repeated and that were red earlier in the story okay if you said Click Clack Moo Click Clack Moo Clickety Clack Moo you're correct what is happening each time these words are repeated action they're doing you can look at the picture or your evidence there if you said the cows are typing or thought that you are correct let's read on the next day he got another note deer Farmer Brown the hands are cold too electric blankets sincerely the cows don't friends on page 279 we are noticing that they are getting very frustrated so the anime for writing another note to the farmer girls were growing impatient with a farmer they left a new note on the Barn Door no milk no eggs no eggs cried Farmer Brown in the background he heard them Click Clack Moo new Clickety Clack Moo all right friends so I noticed that the hens are doing something when they didn't get the blankets they wanted less at this as a clue to our clue chart to help us figure out arsene is so before we decided one clue was the cows like to type remember they typed a letter to the farmer asking for electric blankets because the barn was cold another clue I remember is at the farmer will not give cows blanket so the cow stop giving milk can you sync up a clue from this what are the animals doing the hens don't get the blankets they want so they stop giving eggs let's see what happens next cows that type pens on strike who ever heard of such a thing how can I run a saw I'm with no milk and no eggs Farmer Brown was Furious so friends remember that the point of view is the way that a character thinks or feels so what character say help us understand there you or what they're thinking what does the farmer say on page 283 are there some quotation marks here in here what is he saying how is the type hens on strike whoever heard of such a thing how can I run a farm with no milk and no eggs so his point of view is that he has never heard of cows that type or hens that go on strike so his point of view is sharing us that sharing with us that he thinks they're not behaving the way that cows and hens should so we can tell that he is very serious at what is happening Farmer Brown got out his own typewriter do your cows and hens there will be no electric blankets you are cows and I demand milk and eggs sincerely Farmer Brown duck with a neutral party so he brought the ultimatum to the cows boys and girls some of you might know this new vocabulary word neutral but if you haven't heard of it you have a couple strategies and figuring out what it means you can read the sentence that has a distinct about the picture what's happening to help you better understand the word or if you have a dictionary you can look up a word and find out the meaning in a dictionary if I was not sure what the word neutral meant I could look in my diction the words are in alphabetical order so I'd look at the first letter to help me locate the word and the dictionary would tell me that neutral means not on either side of an argument I know that cows and hen arguing with the farmer so this definition helps me understand that the duck is neutral because he isn't involved in the argument is not on the side of the farmers and he's not on the side of the cows neutral try to use word in your vocabulary now the cows held an emergency meeting all the animals gathered around the barn to Snoop but none of them could understand moo all night long Farmer Brown waited for an answer we seem to be finding some more clues getting us closer to the theme we read that Farmer Brown's I choose own letter to the cows and hens and have the duct what did Farmer Brown's letter say do you remember and what do the cows do when they get the letter let's add these Clues to our chart so in her mind let's think about this we had a clue the farmer will not give the cows blanket so the cow stop giving milk the hens don't get the blankets so they stop giving eggs and then another clue is that the farmer demands milk and eggs and the cow meet to discuss his demand can you make a prediction right now what will happen if the cows meeting thumbs up if you think that the cows are going to get their way thumbs down the farmer will get his way let's find out and see if you are right duck knocked on the door early the next morning Bandit Farmer Brown a note let's read what the note says Dear Farmer Brown we will exchange our typewriter for electric blanket leave them outside the Barn Door we will send duct over with the typewriter sincerely the cows was your prediction correct did you figure out that this story was a fantasy remember thinking about fantasies we think about what couldn't really happen so think about what makes this a fantasy can animals really tight make demands can they talk and act like people no parts of the story could really happen cows could give milk and hens can give eggs but the rest of this makes it a fantasy because we know that the animals can't fight make demands talk or act like people Brown decided this was a good deal left the blankets next to the barn door and waited for duct to come with the typewriter here are some other great play the hens don't get the blankets they want so they stop giving eggs another clue could be the farmer demands milk and eggs and the cows meet to discuss his demand and then the cows want to exchange the typewriter for blanket Brown decides this is a good deal I wonder what this could be supporting all of these great Clues we've come up with the next morning he got a note dear Farmer Brown the pond is quite boring we'd like a diving board sincerely the Ducks quick quack quack quack quack quack quack quack discuss the clues we've added you are being charged think about what the character said and did in the story and what happened in the story what message does the author want to give so we know the hens don't the blank expects scuse me don't get the blankets they want so they stop giving eggs and we know another clue the farmer demands milk and eggs and the cows need to discuss his demands another clue is the cows want to exchange data brighter for blankets good deal can you think of what that might be think about what our theme of the week has been if you thought about working together you are correct the animals work together to make their lives better that's been missing for the week for us less learn now about author illustrator meet the author and illustrator author Doreen Cronin an illustrator Betsy Lewin met for the purpose tell us a story about how animals work together to get something they need write an idea for a story about kids who work together to get something they need boys and girls here you see respond
