Room 15 News

Dear Parents,

We have just launched the second unit in language arts. The Big Idea for this unit is "How do animals play a part in the world around us?" During the first week, we will discuss how animals survive and adapt to their surroundings.

In math, we are practicing subtraction with regrouping in hundreds, tens, and ones (e.g. 523-278=___).  Base-ten blocks are available for students who prefer to use concrete manipulatives, and I have also shown them how to draw pictures to represent numbers. There will be a math homework assignment on Tuesday to reinforce this concept.

Please encourage your child to enter the Reflections Contest! This year's theme is a powerful one..."The Heroes Around Us"

There are some fun events planned for this week!

*Family Movie Night on Friday, Oct. 26th @ 6:30 p.m.

Spelling words

Dear Parents,

In your child's Homework Folder or backpack, you will find the first list of spelling words. If your child scored 15 out of 15 words correctly on the Pretest, s/he was given a slightly more challenging list of words to study for Friday.

All the students logged onto Reflex Math in the Computer Lab this morning. Hopefully, this program will help them to master math facts in a fun way.

In language arts, we have launched Unit 1 with the Essential Question of "How do friends depend on each other?" We will continue to read stories about how peers can help one another. There were 8 vocabulary words that were introduced, and most of the students participated in vocabulary matching game with words & definitions.

In math, we have wrapped up Chapter 1 and reviewed the concepts in class. Please take time to go over the Review pages that were sent home on Monday. There will be a test on Wednesday to see how well they understood this chapter.

Thank you, again, for all your support.

Best regards,
Mrs. Honma
