Week 9 Distance Learning: May 18- May 22
Literature Essential Standards Focus Topics to Date:
Main Idea- What the story/chapter is mostly about.
Key Details-Supporting details that tell: How, When, What, Where, Why, How Much, and How Many. Refers to the Main Idea.
Point of View- Who is telling the story?
1st Person= Narrator uses “I”
2nd Person= Narrator uses “YOU”
3rd Person= Narrator uses the character's NAME or “HE”, “SHE”, or “THEY”.
Reading and Note-Taking Skills- Preview the text to get the main idea. When you read something that confuses you, you need to stop and re-read. If you can tell someone about what you just read, then you are retaining the information. When you take notes, the main purpose is to write down the key ideas/details and create a system that works for you. Note-taking can be any or all of the following ideas. Color-coding your notes, taking bullet notes on the text, writing main idea and key details, and highlighting vocabulary.
Literary Genres- The 4 main literary genres are poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama. There are subgenres in each category. For example, in the fiction genre there are subgenres such as fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, historical fiction and romance.
Theme - In a story it is the underlying message, or “big idea” that the author is wanting to teach the reader. It is universal in nature. Some popular themes in literature are: Love, Death, Good vs Evil, and Survival. There are many more popular themes that you will read about in books, these are just a few.

If you have already turned in a book report to me, then please find a new chapter book to read. This should be a different book than Island of the Blue Dolphins. (IBD)

4th Grade California Social Studies and ABC Book Activity
You will be finishing Chapter 8 and beginning Chapter 9 this week in Social Studies.
Chapter 8 – CONNECTING CALIFORNIA ***All notes are due today!***
Monday- Make sure all your notes for Chapter 8 are detailed, organized and written in a MS Word Document. Today you need to send me your MS Word Document for Chapter 8. Remember to get Extra Credit you need to take notes on the videos from last week. These should have a title of what video you watched along with your extra credit notes.
Tuesday- We are starting Chapter 9 today!

Take notes using a Word Document. You will send me the Word Document for Chapter 9 when we have finished reading and doing the activities. Make sure it is an organized document with Lesson headings and your name on it.

Friday- No Social Studies today. It’s a minimum day. You do have your ABC Book to work on. See below for directions.
Alphabet Book 4th and 5th Grade Homeroom Only- Due June 5.
Assignment: Create an alphabet book about coronavirus and the unique way we are living because of it. So, your book might include words about the actual virus (like coronavirus, COVID19, fever), people who are trying to help us conquer the disease (Fauci, Garcetti), ways to fight or prevent the virus from spreading (face mask), or ways your life has changed because of COVID19 (distance learning).
Each page will be a different letter of the alphabet book (A-Z, obviously).
- Each page should have the following:
- The word you chose.
- At least one sentence explaining the importance of the word or what the word means. (Your sentence (s) should be 4th/5th grade sentences, meaning that they should be detailed, with adjectives, adverbs, an/or prepositional phrases.)
- A picture that relates to the word used.
- You may draw a picture.
- You may download and paste a picture.
- You may create a picture on the computer.
- You may take a picture with a camera to illustrate the word or action.
- You should check your sentences for grammar and spelling mistakes.
Make this alphabet book something that you can keep, to remember this time. This is a time that will be part of history books and, as much as we might not like it, we are living this history. You’ll want to remember details to tell people when you’re an adult. Did you know that Mayor Garcetti is using L. A. Times articles from 1918 to help guide him in his decisions about today?
You’ll create 2 pages a day, for a total of 26 pages. The entire project is due on June 2, but I will ask you to send me pages throughout to check your progress. I will not post these directions every week. If you need to re-read the directions it will be on my Edlio page on the right-hand side labeled ABC Book.
Your book may be created on Word, Power Point, or by hand. If you have another idea, that’s fine. Whichever program you choose should be one that you can share with me throughout the project, as well as at the end.

Most books have the same type of layout for the whole book. For example, one book might have a sentence that include the words, along with paragraphs giving more detail. Another might use words in a rhyming sentence. A third might have a central character interacting with the words throughout the book, telling a story throughout.

5th Grade Social Studies and ABC Book Activity - Room 6 ONLY!
I have broken down Chapter 12 into smaller sections because the textbook goes through the American Revolution very fast. Some days you will be reading the text and taking notes and other days you will be watching videos that teach more about certain battles and people of the American Revolution. You do need to take notes on the videos and add them to your Word Document for Chapter 12. Please stay organized while you are taking notes. There should be clear headings or titles for each day.
