Week 12 - Last week- June 8-11

Week 12 Distance Learning: June 8-11. 😊 

 

This is our last week of distance learning for the school year.  I have loved being your teacher and am sorry we couldn’t spend it together at Vista Grande. I am proud of each of you for being flexible and learning how to work from home. You have become even more responsible for your own learning and managing your time so that you can turn in assignments when they are due. We all did our best during these unprecedented times and I hope you know how much I have missed being with you each day in our happy little Room 6 classroom. For my 5th graders, please come back and visit me when you can and congratulations on becoming intermediate school students!  For my 4th graders, I will see you next year when you are the big kids in 5th grade at Vista GrandeHave a safe and relaxing summer and remember to read lots of great books! 😊 

 

Monday- June 8 

It is Shreya’s birthday today so please send her a birthday greeting. You are all creative so please think of something fun to celebrate Shreya!.  

9:00- 9:30 Room 6 - Drop off your social studies book, any books that you borrowed and anything else that needs to be returned to Vista Grande. I have collected all your desk belongings and classroom materials that are yours and will be giving you a bag with your items today.  

  

   What 5th graders need to turn in TODAY:  

  • - Letter to your future self (homeroom class bag, labeled with your first and last name, and Colvin)  
  • - Social Studies home copy textbook (homeroom class bag, labeled with your first and last name, and Colvin 
  • - Daily Geo Map Booklet (homeroom class bag, labeled with your first and last name, and Colvin 
  • - Book report books you checked out for your American Revolution/Colonial Times book report (homeroom class bag, labeled with your first and last name, and Colvin 
  • - Classroom library books (for Waddell-Chow, Tredennick, or Colvin—bag and label accordingly)   
  • - Literature novels if you borrowed (bag and label to Mrs. Colvin)  
  • - Chromebooks and chargers (bag with first and last name, these will go to main office where you checked them out)  
  • - VG Library books (bag with first and last name, there will be a bin to collect)  
  • - Anything else you’ve borrowed from VG during your time here. It’s time to turn it all in!

Please note, we do NOT need back any of your composition books, spirals, math workbooks, Wonders workbooks, etc... Just textbooks, library books, and other materials we use year after year listed above.  

  

You will drop off the items listed above and receive a bag with the contents of your desk and other work and materials that need to be passed back to you.   

   

With any extra time today, work on this COVID Time Capsule Project. It’s optional, and you don’t have to turn anything in to me.

5th Graders 

Get ready for your drive-through promotion! For students in Mrs. Colvin’s homeroom class, you are invited to have your parents or another loving adult drive you through the VG parking lot from10:00-10:20. Mrs. Treddenick’s class is driving through from 10:20-10:40 and Mrs. Waddell-Chow's class is from 10:40 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. TODAY. We all can’t wait to see you and to give you a nice send-off from VG! You are official intermediate school students!!! 

Don’t forget to wear your tie-dye t-shirts! 

 

4th Graders-  

Congratulations, you are now officially the 5th graders at Vista Grande! The big kids on campus!!! See you in the fall and hope you have a wonderful summer! 

 

 

 

 

 

End of Year Important Reminders

Hello Room 6! It is almost the end of the school year. You should have received an email about how and when to return your Vista Grande belongings to school next week. Just in case, here is a breakdown of next week.
 
Monday, June 8 from 9:00-9:30 all Room 6 students will be dropping off textbooks, library book, borrowed classroom chapter books and any other items belonging to Vista Grande. I will be there to collect these items in the parking lot drive through. Please wear a mask and know that I wish I could hug you all, but I won't be able to. I will be giving you a bag with your name in it and all the desk and classroom belongings that are yours.
 
What 4th graders need to turn in on Monday:

  • Classroom library books (for Waddell-Chow, Tredennick, or Colvin)

Friday, June 11 - 5th Grade Drive-By Promotion Celebration!
Room 6 time slot for this is from 10:00-10:20! I will be there waving and cheering for you. Congratulations on completion on elementary school. I wish you good luck as you move on to the next chapter of your life. Vista Grande will miss you, but middle school is going to be great! You can always come back and visit me when you have your minimum days! :)

***We have been focusing on Essential Standards for Literature for the last few weeks. This week we are focusing on Mindfulness, Stress, and Setting Goals for next year. The tips in these videos are valuable for next year and even for today. Special Assignment for 5th Graders only in Room 6: 

Write a letter to your 6th grade future self. Write a letter and put it in a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Bring it to school when you return your social studies textbook and any other books you need to return on Monday, June 8. I will mail your letter during the last week of school next year.  😊 

Monday- This week you’ll be writing a letter to your future self. It is an activity we do every year with 5th grade. I just put last year’s letters in the mail for last year’s 5th grade class to receive! Next year, sometime in June, you will receive yours.  

Today, take some time to gather your thoughts. What have you enjoyed about 5th grade, pre- and post- Covid? What are you worried about for next year? What are you looking forward to? Just spend some time reflecting and thinking today. Tomorrow, you’ll begin to write your letter.   

Tuesday- Write a paragraph about what you liked most about your 5th grade year, pre- and post- Covid.  You could include things like school subject, friends, happy memories, special events, or day-to-day routines.  Your paragraph should be 5-8 sentences.   You can choose to type it or write it out by hand, but either way, you’ll be bringing a paper copy of the letter to school to turn in along with your textbooks and other materials next week. 

Wednesday- Add to your letter today.  Write a paragraph about what you are worried about for 6th grade. Your paragraph should be 5-8 sentences.   

Thursday- Add to your letter today.  Write a paragraph about what you are most looking forward to in 6th grade. Your paragraph should be 5-8 sentences. Be sure to sign your letter in cursive. An example would be “Love, 5th grade (your name). 

Friday- Put your letter into an envelope and have an adult help you write your address on the front of the envelope. If you know you are moving (or you might move) between now and the end of the next school year, you can send your letter to someone you know won’t move (like a grandparent or other relative). Ask an adult to help you put on the correct postage for your letter—either a Forever stamp or a Forever international/global stamp if your letter is going abroad (out of the country). Put this letter somewhere safe so you’re ready to bring it to school next week when it’s time.

Literature Essential Standards Focus Topics to Date:

Literary GenresThe 4 main literary genres are poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama. There are subgenres in each category. For example, in the fiction genre there are subgenres such as fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, historical fiction and romance.  

Theme - In a story it is the underlying message, or “big idea” that the author is wanting to teach the reader. It is universal in nature. Some popular themes in literature are: Love, Death, Good vs Evil, and Survival. There are many more popular themes that you will read about in books, these are just a few.

So, your book might include words about the actual virus (like coronavirus, COVID19, fever), people who are trying to help us conquer the disease (Fauci, Garcetti), ways to fight or prevent the virus from spreading (face mask), or ways your life has changed because of COVID19 (distance learning). 
 

Each page will be a different letter of the alphabet book (A-Z, obviously). 

  • Each page should have the following: 
  1.  The word you chose. 
  2.  At least one sentence explaining the importance of the word or what the word means.  (Your sentence (s) should be 4th/5th grade sentences, meaning that they should be detailed, with adjectives, adverbs, an/or prepositional phrases.) 
  3.   A picture that relates to the word used. 
  • You may draw a picture. 
  • You may download and paste a picture.  
  • You may create a picture on the computer.

  • Slide 5Are there differences in season, temperature, or precipitation within your state? Why or why not? 

Finally, start your 5th slide for your Climate PowerPoint presentation. It’s about how the seasons, weather, or precipitation are different in your state depending on where you are. This is usually the toughest slide for 4th and 5th graders to get right.   

Let me give you an example of what I will be looking for. (4th graders may re-word my ideas to make them your own, don’t just copy my words.)  If you were writing about California, you would say that southern California temperatures are mild year-round.  In the fall, we have Santa Ana winds and wildfires, then in winter we get a rainy season.  However, in the Central Valley their summers and winters are significantly hotter and colder than the weather down here, because they’re between two mountain ranges. There are also deserts and other climates you could talk about within the state.

Today you’ll work on slide 3, which is on temperature in your state. Find a graph that shows the highs and lows for your state’s capital over the average year.  It’s usually represented as a bar graph, separated by months of the year, but sometimes I’ve seen it done with a line graph as well. Either one is fine. Paste this graph onto your PowerPoint slide on temperature.   

Tuesday 4/28 

Finish your temperature slide for your Climate PowerPoint. Yesterday you should have found and inserted a graph on yearly temperatures in your state capital. Today you’ll write a description of how the temperatures change over the course of the year in your state. Make sure to pay attention to accuracy.  For instance, if you’re writing about Hawaii, you wouldn’t say that in the fall there are Santa Ana winds and wildfires—that's specific to California.

4th Grade Assignments *****************************************

This week I wanted to give you a more organized breakdown of your week for Literature. You will be doing IReady Lessons on Monday and Wednesday. Directions for Island of the Blue Dolphins for Tuesday and Thursday are below. 

 4th Grade Literature for April 20-24: 

Monday- Log in to your IReady account in the PVPUSD Portal. Work for 30 minutes. 

Tuesday- Listen to Chapter 1 and 2 of IBD. You can find each chapter on my Edlio page under the heading “Island of the Blue Dolphins”.  This is in the blue bar on the right side of the Edlio page. Answer your reading questions for each of the chapters you read today. (see below for format) 

Wednesday- Log in to your IReady account for 30 minutes. I will be checking IReady accounts for who is doing their work each week. 

Thursday- Listen to Chapter 3 and 4 of IBD. Answer your reading questions for Chapters 3 and 4. (see below) 

Friday- Work on your Book Report for the Chapter book you have been reading since Week 1 of Distance Learning. See below for ideas for your Book Report. If you have already turned in a book report to me, then please find a new chapter book to read. 

 

On Tuesday and Thursday, you will be listening to, Island of the Blue Dolphins. (IBD).  You will be answering 4 questions after listening to each chapter. You may do this on lined paper, in a Word document or create a PowerPoint. You will be turning in these summaries each Friday.  

 These are your 4 questions you need to answer after reading each chapter of IBD:

You have been reading a chapter book of your choice since Week 1 (March 16).  When you are finished with your book you need to pick one of the following book reports to complete. 

 Email me a photo if you are creating something hand drawn.   

  1. Book summary (Beginning, Middle, End).
  2. Book Poster with picture and summary. 
  3. Timeline- List 5 or more important events from your book. 
  4. Diorama in a box or on a paper of your favorite part of the chapter book. 
  5. Test- create a test and answer key for your book. 
  6. Scrapbook-pretend you are the main character and design a scrapbook that tells about your life using ideas from the book.
  7. Collage- draw or use pictures from the internet that represent the main character, favorite part, or big idea of your book.
  8. Letters- write a letter to the main character or pretend to be the main character and write a letter to someone in the book.
  9. Graphic Novel- Choose a favorite chapter or section from your book and turn it into a graphic novel. 
  10. PowerPoint- Be creative and tell me about your book. 

 

 

4th Grade California Social Studies and Writing- State Report 

Climate PowerPoint for California: Due Wednesday, May 6. 

Your Climate PowerPoint will be 5 slides total. You will need to look at multiple internet sources to gather your information. You will need pictures and creative graphics on each slide, as well as the required information. Some slides may require you at add charts or graphs such as, a precipitation map or a bar graph.  

  • Introduction page (topic, name of your state, your name, date, and graphics)  
  • Precipitation (how much or little does it rain, what times/seasons of the year?)*A precipitation map may be helpful.  
  • Yearly temperatures (average highs and lows, what’s the weather mostly like?)   *A bar graph may be helpful.  
  • Seasons (what the weather is like, what activities do people do in each season?)  
  • Are there differences in season, temperature, or precipitation within your state? Why or why not?  

 

 I have broken down the assignment to help you schedule your time.  You will have two days to work on each slide. This will be your Social Studies for the next few weeks. 

All PowerPoints must include a slide on the following for your state:

  • Slide 1: Introduction (title, name of your state, your name, date, and graphics) Begin your research for the other slides. 

Wednesday 4/22 and Thursday 4/23 

  • Slide 2: Precipitation (how much or little does it rain?, what times/seasons of the year?) A precipitation map may be helpful here. Search what a precipitation ma looks like for your state.
